This is unbelievably depressing, especially since it is so true.

…still create an effective deterrent to lawbreaking, so I should amend my previous paragraph to say: For certain people in positions of power — namely Trump and his close associates in the Republican party — the preventive effect of law is ineffective. And since most law is voluntary (i.e. reactive), they effectively operate outside the law as they choose.
