They really should get a living wage, I agree. It's hard work. One of my first jobs while still living in Toronto and going to college was as a live-in nanny. I took care of a newborn and a 2-year-old. That was so hard. Dustin, the 2-year-old, was a terror. The newborn, Danielle, was sweet but oh, so, helpless. The great thing was I had room and board and a small cash salary, and it was enough. "Room" was a spare room with a mattress on the floor, but it was clean. I don't remember how it ended, exactly, but I think the mom decided she'd stop working for a while and stay home with the kids since they were so young. Her husband had a booming business--carpet cleaning or something--and they could afford to live on one income. But this was back in the 1980s. Hard to believe both kids are now geriatric millennials.
