I've made a near-religion out of not clicking on Medium meta articles, particularly ones that discuss earnings, but your headline was intriguing and I completely agree with your conclusion. Another thing I might add is that followers (I have more than 8.4k) do not really translate into earnings. The most consistent earnings come from subscribers to your work and, to a much lesser degree, to publications in which you're published.
