One word: cult. Having spent 14 years in a religious cult from 1981-1995, I understand the thinking. You consider yourself part of a movement and the leader is infallible. You're surrounded by people who believe as you do, which is that the rest of the world just "doesn't get it." You feel nothing but scorn for non-believers. And you only fraternize with your own clan/cult. Take a look at a trump rally sometime and it's a religious revival. They worship trump because he is "god's flawed vessel." And they will vote for his dead corpse or one of his vile spawn before ever pulling the lever for a Democrat because they are convinced that we are the evil ones. We support people of color, LGBTQ+ folks, and heathens like Muslims? Here in "murica" which is a "Christian" nation? To them there is only one god--their Christian one--and the orange one is the chosen one.
