Being a teenager is brutal, but if you have a room with a door or a pair of headphones, your favorite bands, and the songs you love, you’ll survive.

Songs touch you at any age. But at 16, the music you love does more than just touch. It reaches all the way into the deepest part of you, your essence, your soul. No wonder this prompt is making the Medium rounds.

My bittersweet 16

The year was 1978. I was 16 going on 17, which is magical and impossible in equal measure. These songs, my friends and consolation, got me through it all. Boys I liked who didn’t like me back. Algebra and chemistry tests I agonized over. The prom dress I wanted but would never have. The part in the school musical I tried out for but didn’t get. My parents’ imminent breakup.

If you were 16 in 1978, your list is probably different, but this is my list and I stand behind it.
