I Made The Yummiest Cake Last Night

It only has five ingredients including a secret ingredient you’ll never guess

Spoiler: it doesn’t look like the one in the photo when it’s done. But if I’d featured the slightly messy albeit much more blueberry-blessed yet badly plated cake I made, you might not have clicked.

Cosmetic considerations aside, my cake tastes much better than the one in the featured image. It’s blueberrier and lemonier. Moister. Richer. It’s the gold brick standard of cake — if a gold brick tasted like heaven brimming with antioxidants.

The cake has only five ingredients, one of which you’ll never guess. Well, maybe you will guess even if I could not. The mystery ingredient is why the cake is called the Secret Ingredient Blueberry-Lemon pound cake.

It may not seem like it at first glance, but this cake is part of my retro cakes series because — who knew? Not me — the secret ingredient has been around since 1950. I was gobsmacked when I found out. Then, I remembered all those commercials and magazine ads for the secret ingredient. Every Christmas when I was a kid.
