I agree. Pence isn't a hero, because of his cowardly acts before and since January 6, but that day, he did finally put himself on the line between trump and the constitution, between trump and democracy. I'm sure he knew he was putting his career on the line and perhaps he was also whitewashing his historical legacy at the last possible moment, but at least history will not remember him as accessory to the trumpian attempted coup of 2021.
