Chapter Two — The Last Three Days

We’ve been riding a perfect wave, but it’s breaking now, and we’re heading back to shore on this once-in-a-lifetime vacation. Reality and responsibility aren’t going to wait; we’re going to have to come back from endless blue saltwater to the salt mines. Sigh. It’s been amazing. And we’re not done.

If you missed it, here is Chapter One.

A trip this fancy is unusual for us. Until he retired and I reached a 10-year work milestone and started racking up more vacation time to use or lose, we never spent more than four days away from home. We’re not rich, and we were both raised by frugal parents who survived the Great Depression. Parents who never met a penny they didn’t pinch until it screamed for mercy.

It’s not in our DNA to spend this much time and these many dollars without a good reason, so we saved up our reasons until we had three or four and our money until we had…
