Brilliant, unexpected article. I clicked, as someone who remembers Toto's Africa as the soundtrack of a decade but with weirdly awkward lyrics I never listened to except "I miss the rains down in Africa" (never once heard "blessed," I guess the mind fills in what it thinks it hears). And yes, that bit about Kilamanjaro rising up above the Serengeti always sounded cool, but sort of like having too many gumballs in your mouth at the same time and being unable to chew them. The whole reflection on the context of culture blindsided me in a good way. Thank you for this.
